Chronic and treatment-resistant depression: a study using arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI at 3Tesla.

چکیده
The aim of the present study was to compare patients displaying chronic and treatment-resistant depression with healthy controls, using the resting-state perfusion with arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique at 3T. The study focused on the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sACC), which is a key component in the pathophysiology of depression. Six patients with chronic and treatment-resistant depression and six healthy control subjects were included. ASL is an innovative imaging technique which sidesteps the limitations of other functional neuroimaging techniques (functional MRI, positron emission tomography). A statistical analysis of perfusion maps was performed using SPM2 software. Statistically significant hyperperfusion regions were found in the depressed patient group compared with the healthy control group in the following: the bilateral sACC, left prefrontal dorsomedian cortex, left ACC and left subcortical areas (putamen, pallidum and amygdala). This study confirmed the involvement of the sACC in depression, particularly chronic and treatment-resistant depression, using ASL at 3T, a safe perfusion technique that seems to be appropriate for investigating functional abnormalities in psychiatric disorders.

Measuring Perfusion Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Perfusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) measures the rate at which blood is delivered to tissue. The measure of perfusion acts as an indicator of tissue health. Applications of perfusion imaging include the diagnosis of both acute and chronic disease and the study of micro vascular changes associated with functional cerebral activation. An influential advantage of MRI is that it has no ioniz...
متن کاملSpectrally selective Arterial Spin Labeling Imaging For Breast Cancer Perfusion Study
INTRODUCTION Arterial spin labeled (ASL) MRI [1] is a non-invasive imaging method for measuring perfusion. With intrinsic tracers, the arterial spin-labeled blood, ASL-MRI can be repeatedly applied in seconds, offering great potential in breast cancer studies, especially in monitoring patients during treatment. There are only very limited studies of breast ASL-MRI [2]. One of the major limiting...
متن کاملEarly detection of antiangiogenic treatment responses in a mouse xenograft tumor model using quantitative perfusion MRI
Angiogenesis plays a major role in tumor growth and metastasis, with tumor perfusion regarded as a marker for angiogenesis. To evaluate antiangiogenic treatment response in vivo, we investigated arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure tumor perfusion quantitatively. Chronic and 24-h acute treatment responses to bevacizumab were assessed by ASL and dynamic-contra...
متن کاملPerfusion magnetic resonance imaging with continuous arterial spin labeling: methods and clinical applications in the central nervous system.
Several methods are now available for measuring cerebral perfusion and related hemodynamic parameters using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One class of techniques utilizes electromagnetically labeled arterial blood water as a noninvasive diffusible tracer for blood flow measurements. The electromagnetically labeled tracer has a decay rate of T1, which is sufficiently long to allow perfusion ...
متن کاملNoninvasive Evaluation of CBF and Perfusion Delay of Moyamoya Disease Using Arterial Spin-Labeling MRI with Multiple Postlabeling Delays: Comparison with 15O-Gas PET and DSC-MRI.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Arterial spin-labeling MR imaging with multiple postlabeling delays has a potential to evaluate various hemodynamic parameters. To clarify whether arterial spin-labeling MR imaging can identify CBF and perfusion delay in patients with Moyamoya disease, we compared arterial spin-labeling, DSC, and 15O-gas PET in terms of their ability to identify these parameters. MATERI...
